TL;DR — Hauling myself up Mt. Washington. “Stomping out mental illness” in hopes of bringing awareness and sharing the joy that being outdoors has brought me! Join me! Please help out if you can! 🙂
What is mental health? According to “Google”, ‘mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make healthy choices. But this is not something simple we can just slap a label on. Mental illness is a shitstorm that so many of us are affected by–either directly or indirectly. Over 20% of adults in the United States suffer from some sort of mental illness. and of that, over 50% do not receive help. Perhaps more alarmingly, 1 in 3 children with major depression simply do not get the help they need. Stigma, culture, and infrastructure are huge barriers to progress.
I know I cannot “change the world” but I hope to change my corner of the world. I chose to join a hike with HIKE for Mental Health to help stamp out the stigma of mental illness and conserve wilderness trails. We live in a world too harsh, critical, and robotic. For me, I feel the most at peace in nature. I feel closer to my truest self in nature and connected to the world around me. I do not feel the pressure of the outside world or the need to check my phone or socials. In nature, I can work on myself, and I hope others can do the same. Let’s cause a wave of positivity. I will be hauling myself up this mountain in hopes of bringing awareness and sharing the joy that being outdoors has brought me.
