I’ve decided to challenge myself in a positive way for an important cause – and I’m asking you to do the same! My friend Dale Gryllz and I will be heading out on the largest East to West mountain trail in the United States, the Ouachita National Recreation Trail (pronounced waa-shee-tuh), to promote Mental Health Awareness and raise money for HIKE for Mental Health a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
HIKE for Mental Health’s mission is to increase public awareness of the challenges and suffering faced by those afflicted by mental illness and their families, prevent and alleviate pain caused by mental illness, and increase public appreciation for wilderness trails and preservation.
HIKE for Mental Health distributes 100% of the net proceeds to mission causes. See below for how they will distribute your generous donations. Eighty percent of the hike donations provide grants that enable scientific research and fund programs aimed at alleviating suffering from mental illness. We work through the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation and their outstanding NARSAD grants program to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental illness. Twenty percent of the hike donations support preservation of wilderness trails. We partner with the well-established trail maintenance organizations, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy and the Pacific Crest Trail Association.
