October is mental health awareness month. In honor of this and the six decades of life I have been given thus far, I am hiking 60 miles during the month and fundraising for Hike for Mental Health which supports scientific research, stamping out stigma, and trail conservancy. Instead of hiking the the miles in one stretch, I am planning a bunch of local day hikes around my new hometown of Ithaca, some short, some long, some solo, some with others, and the miles will all add up to 60. I’d be happy to have friends and family members join me if they want and their schedule allows. The theme of Hike for Mental Health’s #hikeOctober campaign is ‘Hike as You Are,’ because no matter how differently we each think or feel or struggle, the beauty of sharing time on a trail offers healing to all.
