I chose to join a hike with HIKE for Mental Health to help stamp out the stigma of mental illness and conserve wilderness trails.
Hiking in the wilderness is my mental therapy, my escape, and without it, my anxiety and depression would be uncontrollable. Many women who were once strangers became good friends with zero judgments of my life, my skills, my experiences. One has become my mentor, responsible for growing me into a self-confident, competent outdoorswoman.
I believe during these trying times, awareness of mental health issues has become more public and more positive. Studies show that exposure to the outdoors and the wilderness reduces anxiety and increases endorphins in the brain.
