Throughout the last year the idea of conquering my first thru-hike – the Te Araroa the South Island – came to Iife. While getting this project and challenge started, the idea of making this hike not only about myself but also letting others profit from it. I heard about the nonprofit organization ‘Hike for Mental Health‘ and thought more about the importance of this topic. Mental health is essential for human wellbeing and happiness. It is proven that being out in nature can contribute to a better mental health. There are many great ways to get people out in nature; hiking is one way of getting in touch with nature and healing yourself. Living in a more and more digitized world connected with the cyber world but disconnected from Mother Earth a growing number of people suffers from mental illnesses. The topic ‘Mental illness’ is for many people a tabu, but it is nothing to be ashamed of. I want to encourage people to talk about their sufferings. Where I am from (Germany and the Yukon) it is winter right now, one of the coldest and darkest times of the year and especially in this time mental support is often needed. Support in this sphere of research is still needed.
I chose to register my first thru- hike at ’Hike for Mental Health‘ to help stamp out the stigma of mental illness and conserve wilderness trails.
There are plenty of other great nonprofit organizations with different goals out there, which I also would encourage to support, but this time, for this project of mine, I felt it is the best fitting choice.
I would be grateful if you will consider supporting me with this project by raising awareness of the topic ‘mental health‘ and/or making a donation for this cause. 100% of the money will go to the work of ‘Hike for Mental Health‘ and will also motivate me to keep on hiking my planned route of 1600 km! Be kind to one another! Thank you so much! Lots of love,
Note 1: Wow, amazing guys! You are awesome, we already accomplished my goal of making 0,10$ per kilometre, but as I can see, we can do more! I will have you on my mind and hike even stronger with each dollar we collect for ‘mental health‘.
