Ice caves, rare northern pine barrens, a 187 ft waterfall, and Lake Maratanza are just some of the amazing features of this autumn hike on the Shawangunk Mountains.
Leading this hike will be Karen Viola. By day, Karen is the art director for children’s book projects for a well-known publisher.
Last year, she completed a 50 mile section hike on the Appalachian Trail in Georgia, raising more than $3,000 for mental health research and trail preservation.
I chose this hike because it is a spirit-lifting place, and has a wide diversity of beautiful geological and ecological features; there is something there for everyone. I am proud to share a special slice of my beautiful home state of New York in all its autumn splendor.
I want to do a hike with HIKE for Mental Health because I believe in the importance of their mission to support the science and spirit that battles mental illness and its stigma. I hike for my own mental health, and mental illness is an issue close to my heart..having lost loved ones to the disease and witnessed my brother’s rough trail to survival.
Registration for Karen’s hike is free. All participants who raise $100 or more from their sponsorship page will receive a free HIKE for Mental Health quick-dry shirt.
