There are two ways to participate in Summit Mt. Washington, on foot or via the Cog Railroad. Neither way is better or worse than the other. It is matter of which mode of transportation will give you joy and is suited for your level of fitness.

If you are an experienced hiker, have previously summited Mt. Washington or other New England peaks, or are in good physical fitness (cardio exercise of 40 minutes or more at least once a week), then you may want to attempt to hike on foot. If you are not sure, please consult a doctor. Remember that for most people, it is 3-4 hours of steady uphill hiking over uneven rocks and roots – equivalent to taking the stairs up and then down a 400 story building.

If that doesn’t sound like your thing, or you just want a more relaxed way to enjoy the amazing views up and down the mountain, as well as the magnificent 360 degree panoramic views at the top, then we invite to consider riding the Cog Railroad. It is an amazing experience. You should plan to buy your tickets online in advance to guarantee yourself a spot.
