“To give hope to those going through what I have been through and to show that there is no shame in having a mental illness.”
That is how our Mt.Washington hike founder, Sue Twombly, describes her reasons for publishing Hiding Behind The Laughter.
It is an honest and brave autobiographical work that chronicles her life experiences.
“Mental illness feels like someone put a key to my brain and turned it, then left with the key,” writes Sue.
Despite all the challenges she has faced, the overriding sense of the book is of moving forward, of finding ways to overcome.
“I am no medical expert,” writes Sue, “but I’ve been through it, and I’m here today to tell all with mental illness that there is help available.”
Sue founded our annual Summit Mt. Washington in New Hampshire in 2012. It has since gone on to become one of our most popular events each year, drawing hikers from all over the country to experience the beauty of the White Mountains while helping to stamp out the stigma of mental illness.
