A Touching Story of a Loved One’s Battle
Brian Hughes was born to Patrick and Brigid Hughes and lived with the invisible disability of bi-polar schizophrenia. Susan Letcher posted this touching story of how mental illness affects sufferers and families on our Facebook page, so we want to share it with our supporters and followers.
It reminds us that the impacts of mental illness are felt not only by those afflicted but by all who love them as well. Our hearts go out to the Hughes family, even as we are inspired by the authenticity and humanity with which they tell their story.
Thanks to the Hughes family for telling Brian Joseph Hughes bittersweet story which showed what a heavy price Brian and his family paid for his illness. Unfortunately, back when Brian was young, doctors did not fully understand the specific mental disorders he was battling. Even though my heart was breaking watching his life unfold before me, I also felt my heart lift towards the end, when Brian’s parents stressed that even though he had a lot of sadness in his life, Brian Joseph Hughes knew incredible joy, from living with supportive, loving siblings and intelligent, caring and loving parents.
Sincerely,
