This Veterans Day walk, in conjunction with Operation Paperback, is dedicated to our returning service men and women, still battling for their own mental wellness.
Operation Paperback is a non-profit organization that collects gently used books nationwide and sends them to American troops deployed overseas. They were contacted by Rosa, a VA nurse assigned to the Behavioral Health Unit of her US hospital.
In Rosa’s own words, “Our ward is strictly behavioral health and all of our patients are active duty. Most carry their battle scars on the inside and we have the fleeting opportunity to care for them in their crisis time. If you could provide any of the listed literature I promise I will ensure it reaches the right hands. If even one is helped, it would be magnificent.”
After last year’s hike, we heard from Rosa again.
Thank you and your fellow hikers! When I first started working on [the ward] I saw the need for books and you are an answered prayer. The insight they get is at times not possible without actually seeing it in writing. My wish was to have a library for them but many ask to keep the books and I can’t deny them this so we are frequently in need of more. Please keep me posted and know that your deeds are fruitful.
Fundraising is not required for this hike.
Simply make a $25 donation, which we will use to purchase the requested mental wellness books and pamphlets. Or you may purchase a book from this Amazon Wish List and show us a copy of your receipt showing the purchase and delivery address to the VA hospital unit.
While it is not required, if you do wish to collect sponsors for the hike, just let us know in comments. We will give a free HIKE for Mental Health quick-dry shirt to hikers who raise $100 or more.
