“I am an avid hiker, and I love the trails and scenery at Matthiessen State Park,” says hike organizer Josh McLaughlin. His October 11 hike in the Dells area of Matthiessen State Park makes Illinois the latest state in our Fourteen in ’14 program.
Josh is the nephew of HIKE for Mental Health Director of Hiker Registration Diana Pease, and he credits her for his inspiration:
After hearing about her experiences with HIKE for Mental Health, I wanted to become a part of the cause… It is a great opportunity to spread awareness about mental illnesses and the challenges that people with mental health issues have to face on a daily basis. Also, it’s a great way to raise funding for scientific research! Here’s to 14 States in 14!
Read on for details about the amazing hike Josh has planned.

Watch for the unusual flora and fawna, specially adapted for life in the lush greenery of the canyon…
Marvel at the sight of Giant’s Bathtub, Strawberry Rock, and Devil’s Paint Box…
These are just a few of the attractions of the two-hour hike in the Dells area of Matthiessen State Park near North Utica, IL.
This hike encompasses what many believe is the most beautiful natural area in northern Illinois, yet is still in easy driving distance from Chicago, Rockford, Peoria, and Davenport.
The 3 mile hike will loop along the Bluff Trail, the Interior Canyon Trail and other connecting trails to make for an enjoyable afternoon in the cool, lush greenery of the canyon.
